Sade
is a twelve year old girl living in Nigeria
when her mother is shot by unknown assassins. Her father, an outspoken journalist,
knows that the government is trying to stop him from writing about corruption
and realizes that his whole family is in danger. He arranges for Sade and
her 10 year old brother Femi to escape to England
by pretending to be the children of a visiting woman. However, when they
arrive in England,
the woman abandons Sade and Femi. The two children are unable to
locate their uncle, a university professor who has been threatened and has
gone into hiding. They are picked up by police and handed over
to immigration authorities who
place them in foster homes. Because they are worried about their father,
Sade is afraid to reveal their true names and background. Sade goes to
school where she is bullied
by the other girls, but finds inspiration from Miriam, a refugee from
Somalia.
By
chance their social worker recognizes their description from their father
who has entered England illegally and is being held for deportation.
Sade and Femi are reunited with their father in prison, but the Nigerian
government claims that he murdered his own wife and press for his extradition.
When her father embarks on a hunger strike, Sade enacts a plan to tell "Mr.
Seven O'Clock News" her father's story. After the story airs
on television, public attention and support follow, and her father is
eventually released.
